 Volunteer!
Are You Looking for a Way to Give Back to Your Community?
Elder Services of Worcester Area has several volunteer opportunities available, which will provide you with a meaningful and rewarding experience. If you have a few hours of time to spare each week and would like to make a difference in the life of a frail and/or isolated elder consider becoming involved in our Senior Companion or Friendly Visitor Program. Our volunteers find these positions very enriching as it provides them an opportunity to reach out to someone who needs a friend, a smile and an outlet for socialization. In helping others the volunteer finds a new sense of pride and joy that comes from helping someone in need.
Elder Services of Worcester Area carefully screens all volunteers before they are matched to an elder. Screening process includes a criminal background check.
Senior Companion Program The Senior Companion Program, a component of the National Senior Service Corps. is sponsored by the Family Services of Central Massachusetts, The Corporation of National Service, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and participating agencies provides funding for this program. Elder Services of Worcester Area, Inc. is one of twenty volunteer stations in Worcester and the surrounding towns.
Senior Companions must be sixty years of age or older, and have an ability to relate and interact well with persons of varied social, economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. They should be sensitive to the needs of older persons, and have a genuine interest in this age group.
One of the goals of the Senior Companion Program is to help frail, isolated elders remain independent by assisting with everyday activities. They may accompany frail elders to medical appointments or to a nutrition site. They may go for walks, play games, shop for groceries, or prepare a light meal for their clients. Other time spent might include reading together, reminiscing or just visiting. Companions visit their clients for 2-4 hours once or twice per week.
Call us at 508-756-1545, or use our Inquiry Form to learn more about becoming a Senior Companion.
